Mission & Vision
The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) traces its origin with the establishment of first IIT at Kharagpur immediately after independence in 1952. The first prime minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, termed IITs as the temple of modern technological learning created to address the need and urge of the nation. Accordingly, when the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 was enacted by the Indian Parliament, the IITs were given the status of the Institute of National Importance.
IIT Patna, commonly known as the second generation IIT, was established in 2008. The IITs in the country, having academic autonomy, are entrusted with the prime responsibility comprising:
